Music playlist week #29 (The Emo edition)

Music playlist week #29 (The Emo edition)

Following our article about Nu-Metal a few weeks ago, now we thought we'd go over musics second most maligned genre, Emo.

"Emo" is a dirty word in music. Smudged eyeliner, floppy fringes, and eye-wateringly tight jeans left fans of it open to ridicule, which was hardly fair. While it may be seen as a dirty word, it's probably the most confused term in music.

People will likely point at the likes of My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy as the supposed Emo forebears, but the roots of it actually are from way before that.

You can track emo all through the 1980s with bands like Rites Of Spring, and the 1990s with The Get Up  Kids. By the time the Millenium came around, the lines between Emo and Pop Punk became blurred by the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Saves The Day and Brand New, who all fused their punky, scrappy guitars with a pop structure and added in withering and melancholic lyrics. Just like that, modern Emo was born.

Then, in the mid-'00's, things went wild. The emergence of MySpace took Emo music from just another music genre to a fully-fledged counter-culture. Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Paramore and Panic! At The Disco became the figureheads. It's en era that Emo "purists" reject, but it was then that genre hit the heights like never before. The number of guys with red eye makeup and girls with orange hair was absolutely staggering.

What is the greatest Emo band of all time? Are they on the list or have we missed them off and need telling? Let us know.
