Having lived with the S Series for a few weeks now I thought it was time to give my view on this product.
I guess the first two words that come to mind are surprised and happy.
Surprised that such a small system can produce such rich, involving sound and obviously happy that it does. I was very sceptical at first as having a full blown home cinema set-up I know how it should sound and I didn’t think something so small could do justice to watching movies but I have been proved wrong.
I was setting up a small TV room with games consoles (for the kids) and wanted a surround sound system to finish it off. I wanted something simple the kids could use without going through a lengthy training session of “switch that on then switch to that input etc”. I looked at various sound bars but nothing really stood out. I then read a small article in Home Cinema Choice about Damson and what they were trying to achieve with their system. It was all very interesting and I kept an eye on how the system was developing.
Usually I would wait until I at least seen a review in the technology press before purchasing but time was marching on and no sign of said reviews. So, after a nice online chat with Damson customer support I took the plunge and ordered the S Series.
Easy to set up
Wireless rear speakers (built in battery)
Great price – good value for money for what you get
4K pass through (x2 HDMI inputs gives you option to add more equipment if you have used all the TV HDMI inputs)
To be honest there aren’t really any
The bass could maybe do with a bit more oomph but given the compact size of the subwoofer I’m probably expecting too much.
The only thing I would add is the system is being used in a small room (approx. 3 square metres) so cannot comment how it would sound in a bigger room.
So ultimately, I have no hesitation in recommending this product. The fact it comes with a 30 day money back guarantee means if you are not happy you can return it for a full refund but something tells me you won’t be doing that.
I was looking at upgrading my home cinema system from an ancient JVC-THL1 as I was not able to lay cables for rear speakers in the house I have recently moved to.
I was looking for an Atmos system with wireless rear speakers so initially purchased the Sony HT-Z9F with a view to adding the rear speakers at a later date.
Despite Sony's claim about the Atmos capabilities of the HT-Z9F i was underwhelmed with the Atmos effect so it went back.
By chance I came across the Damson S Series whilst looking for Atmos systems with wireless rear speakers. I was a little sceptical that you could get a great sound from such a small system. After speaking at length with mark from Damson I took the plunge and ordered the system from Damson direct.
The parcel arrived the next day. The packaging was superb and the set arrived in perfect condition.
I unboxed everything, set it all up in less than half an hour, using the HDMI 1 for my XBox One S, HDMI 2 for my Sony S7200 and configured ARC return for all my other connected devices
I added the Atmos app to my XBox and configured it to output an Atmos signal and proceeded to audition a number of 4K titles. First up was Spiderman: Homecoming, the Subwoofer unit light was flashing indicating an Atmos source and I was enveloped in sound, the Washington Monument scene just sounded amazing, from start to finish I felt like I was actually there, the difference between this system and the Sony was like night and day. The rear speakers show no sign of latency and the sound they put out from the 4 speakers in each is amazing. The overhead effects are perfect and you truly feel like you're part of the action.
Moving on to the Greatest Showman, the Damson handled the musical numbers with gusto and again the soundscape fully immerses you, in La La Land there was a scene where a smoke alarm goes off and I was convinced that it was my smoke alarm!!
Normal TV is greatly enhanced soundwise and watching the World Cup is taken to the next level with this system, likewise with the audio output from my S7200, normal 5.1 / 7.1 soundtracks sound absolutely amazing with an attention to detail that was missing from my JVC, in fact I've been repeat watching some older films and its like hearing them anew
I had a few post setup questions that Mark answered, he also gave recommendations on some additional material to watch and lsiten too, its great when the customer service department is as passionate about the product as Mark was.
After having the system for a few weeks I'm very happy I took the plunge and at £150 cheaper than the Sony system (with rears) its top value for money.
A few niggles I have are the inability to set the individual speaker / subwoofer volume / EQ and also the volume increases whilst using the remote volume are a bit to large for my liking.
On occasion the remote fails to respond to key presses, not sure if that's wireless interference with all I have in my house but after a couple of presses it seems to spring back into life.
So in summary, awesome system, awesome sound, top notch customer service, what are you waiting for?
I bought this system to fully complement an LG TV with 4K/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos capability and three 4K video sources (LG 4K Bluray player, Apple TV 4K, Amazon FireTV 4K).
Overall I was impressed by how small the system is, yet how much punch it has. The setup of the Atmos extension on the main soundbar with magnets is elegant, and the fact that there is not another connector cable between the soundbar and the subwoofer is also great for setup options and eliminating wires. The fully wireless and battery powered rear speakers (with included mounting brackets) is genius and especially pleasing to the wife who HATES wires. I've watch 3 full length feature movies so far and still have not yet needed to charge the rears. Overall the sound is expansive and although the bass is a little lacking, given the size of the system and compared to all other Dolby Atmos soundbar systems which cost up to 2x as much, this performs admirably.
Some design and feature improvements to consider for the future:
1. Longer or modular power cords - the ones included are way too short.
2. More substantial remote control - feels a little flimsy compared to the rest of system.
3. Ability to expand this system to a full discrete wireless 7.1.4 Atmos solution:
a. Additional 4 S-Cubes could be added for side channels and discrete Front Left and Front Right channels, turning the soundbar into a discrete center channel
b. Maybe develop two rear height channel add-on speakers that snap on to the top of the S-Cubes like the front Atmos bar snaps onto the top of the soundbar?
4. Ability to tell which S-Cube is set to which channel without having to pry open the charging cover to see if it's set to right rear (circle) or left rear (triangle) - maybe a light up indicator at top? Since I take my speakers down to charge, putting them back up makes it hard to tell which channel each is. Especially will be important if my suggestion #3 is followed and you now have potentially 6 S-Cubes to re-position after charging
5. Ability to process DTS:X material via firmware update
6. Addition of another HDMI input on the subwoofer for a total of 3 HDMI inputs
